Mickey Powell

On March 3, our friend and leader, Mickey Powell, passed away after a courageous and long battle with cancer. Rosalie Powell and many of his family members were with him.

Mick took over the operations of Read for Life when there was no one else to step in and get us organized. He worked with all the difficult parts of any operation: scheduling, grants and gifts, insurance, etc. He hounded us to account for our volunteer hours and stay on task. He inspired us all by his hard work and his strong belief in what Read for Life stands for.

A memorial service is planned for Mickey at River Ridge Ranch in Springville on Sunday March 15 at 1:00 PM.

The need for Read for Life continues.

Poverty and lack of education are big problems in Tulare County.
Tulare County has one of California's highest rates of teen pregnancies.
There is a documented connection between early exposure to reading and success in school, yet many Tulare County children have no books at home.

Read for Life

  • Provides books for families in need.

  • Teaches parents the importance of reading aloud to their children.

  • Helps young mothers learn to read to their children.
